Bienvenido to the First Emergency Logistics Training in Peru

Earlier this month, the Logistics Cluster in conjunction with the World Food Programme Peru Country Office held the first Emergency Logistics Training in Peru, bringing together 20 actors from 16 different organizations to enhance coordination for future emergencies.

Participants gathered in the Hacienda San Jose, 200km south of Lima, a significant location in Peru’s cultural heritage built in the eighteenth century and partially destroyed during the 2007 earthquake.

For three days, the group was able to gather and enrich its understanding of the humanitarian architecture to further debate about lessons learned and best practices in emergencies to effectively address logistics gaps and bottlenecks at country and regional level

“These three days have been an eye-opening experience to me. I was able to see the emergency from the humanitarian perspective, the pre-existing mechanisms and knowledge in place. We must use all that to be better prepared because the next emergency might be tomorrow" said Juan-Manuel Arribas Berendsohn, the Executive Director of Hombro a Hombro, an initiative streamlining private sector support during emergencies.

Peru has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic over the last 20 months and is constantly at risk of a big scale earthquake or tsunami as the country is located in a seismic zone. These threats put the Peruvian responders, led by the Civil Defense (INDECI), under significant pressure to be able to response efficiently to all potential emergencies.

Building on the momentum of this event, the WFP Peru Country Office will engage in re-activating the National Logistics Working Group and develop a road map for preparedness activities to ensure every actor plays an active role in strengthening response capacities in-country.
