What is Decarbonisation to the WREC?
Decarbonization is the process of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. While the term refers specifically to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions (‘carbon’), it can refer to reducing any greenhouse gas (e.g., CO2, Methane, Nitrous Oxide, Fluorinated Gases). Decarbonization includes any step leading to a GHG emission reduction, including calculating baselines and developing roadmaps; and acting (e.g., switching to a renewable energy provider). Decarbonization can take the form of absolute reduction by year or against a baseline (e.g., an organization emits less overall GHGs this year compared to last year; or compared to their baseline year of 2019); or relative reduction (e.g., an organization emits more GHGs compared to last year or a baseline but has grown significantly; taking this growth into consideration, GHGs per employee have decreased). Ultimately, the aim is to reduce absolute GHGs to get as close as possible to zero.
