Smart Vehicle Disposal - Fleet Forum

Summary

Published in April 2026, Smart Vehicle Disposal: Balancing Mobility Needs with Asset Costs and Environmental Impact was commissioned by Fleet Forum and prepared by the INSEAD Humanitarian Research Group with support from the U.S. Department of State. The report challenges the long-standing humanitarian practice of replacing vehicles after five years or 150,000 km, finding that a single disposal rule does not consistently deliver the lowest costs or best operational outcomes. Instead, it encourages humanitarian organizations to adopt evidence-based fleet disposal approaches that balance operational requirements, total cost of ownership, and environmental impact, helping logistics and supply chain professionals make more informed asset management decisions
