HIGHLIGHTS
- A Logistics Cluster meeting was held on the 27th February in Harare with participation of UNICEF, WHO Zimbabwe, WHO Geneva, IFRC, SAVE THE CHILDREN, MSF Holland, GOAL Ireland, WFP.
- A new 500smq warehouse has been made available to the humanitarian community in Harare.
- Next Logistics Cluster Meeting is on 11 March 2009, WFP Country office Harare.
CLUSTER ACTIVITIES UPDATES:
The Logistics Cluster Con-ops has been presented to the cluster participants for their feedbacks and inputs. It was approved with no major changes. The Con-ops is available here
The document will be updated as per the operational needs of the humanitarian community on the ground. The Zimbabwe logistics website is up and running. Partners will find all relevant documentation to request services to the cluster on the website. SOPs are being finalised.
An assessment of the logistics cluster support provided so far has been done. So far, the services consisted mainly in providing storage and transport to humanitarian partners as follow:
- Storage
UNICEF is currently storing NFIs in four Hubs. Soap bars, buckets, Aquatabs, ORS, educational material are stored in Beitbridge, Gweru, Mutare and Harare where it is pick up by UNICEF’s implementing partners.
A 500smq warehouse has been made available to the humanitarian community in Harare. In additional, WFP warehouse can store extra cargo if needed. WHO is currently moving all its cargo from NATPHARM to the interagency warehouse. NATPHARM warehouse will be emptied shortly to allow for much needed roof repairs.
- Transport
Ministry of Health, Medecin sans Frontiere, World Health Organisation has been moving cargo through the cluster from Harare to Masvingo Provincial Hospital, Mutoko Hospita, Shamva District Hospital and Bindura District Hospital.
UPCOMING CLUSTER SUPPORT
- IFRC, Save the Children have contacted the Logistics Cluster in relation to transport support.
- UNICEF foresees a need for additional storage requirement in Mutare where most of their NFI will be stored. The Cluster is in the process of identifying warehousing solutions to meet the increased demand.
- The cluster is working closely with WHO, and will be providing transport support in several affected districts. First dispatch to Mt Darwin will be organised shortly.
OPERATIONS & SUPPLY CHAIN
- WFP contracted two small trucks of 3.5mt and 7mt, those trucks are dedicated to the logistics cluster support activities in the rural areas.
- WFP 30mt trucks flatbed trucks can also be mobilised for transport of large consignments if transport gaps are identified.
- Given foreseen increased cargo storage requirements, the Logistics Cluster has ordered three large 10x32m mobile warehouse from UNHRD Dubai to be received in the coming weeks. In the meantime, two WFP prefabricated warehouse are set up in Mutare to store NFIs. An additional three 10x24mt WFP warehouse can be deployed in the field if additional storage requirements are identified.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
Information needs are been discussed with cluster members. Transporter lists, Fuel and transport rates, inventory of supplies, etc will be on the agenda of the next cluster meeting.
