Eritrea has one rail-line. Running from Asmara down to Massawa the line (117km) has been closed for the past 20 years, however rehabilitation and repair works over the last two years has seen limited use of the line for tourism.
Due to its narrow gauge & winding climb from sea-level to the Asmara plateau the line could not be use for commercial transport purposes.
