Discharge Rates
Bulk : From 2,000 - 2,500 mt at quayside (conventional discharge), subject to the number of hatches working (3 - 4 hatches), to 7,000 - 12,000 mt at the silo, reference GBHL per 24 suject to silo space availability. Therefore, it depends on the discharge mode.
Break Bulk : 1,500 - 2,500 mt per 24 hours with 4 hatches working. Vessel turn around time could be possibly reduced to half in exceptional circumstances.
Containerized : 300 - 340 containers per 24 hours when all terminals are being utilized, 200 - 240 containers per 24 hours when discharging at main container terminal (ship-to-shore gantry), 100 - 120 containers per 24 hours when discharging at conventional berth, 100 - 120 containers per 24 hours, when using ships gear.
Average Off-Take Capacity ex Port
3,500 mt per day, provided there is adequate availability of trucks. For containerized cargo the uplift capacity is between 800 to 1,000 boxes per day, depending on sufficiency of necessary handling equipment.

General Information
KPA allows vessels with a maximum LOA of 230m to berth, depending on the availability of space. Maximum draft in approaches is 13.25m. No beam restrictions. Nevertheless, non-geared vessels are limited by the outreach of shore cranes.

There are facilities for handling bulk cement (reference Mbaraki and English Point), bulk molasses and tallow, edible oils, and other build liquids.
Other bulk cargo, ie. grains, fertilizers, are handled at the general cargo berths.
Coal and fluorspar are handled at the bulk cement berths at Mbaraki for cargo.

WFP has rehabilitated BP1 shed (operational capacity 13,000 mt) for its own use within the port area. BP1 mainly serves WFP cargo in transit to the region. Kenya inbound cargo is temporarily stored at BP1 only in cases where Customs clearance is not completed.
Cargo Handling Equipment (break-bulk / bulk)
The port of Mombasa is better equipped in terms of cargo handling capacity than other ports in the region (ie. shore cranes, handling equipment, vessel discharge and cargo off-take capacity ex port).
KPA's handling equipment is limited. Shipping agents and other private operators are also using their own gear and / or sub-contract necessary gear as a result of the above. No private company as yet has been contracted to upgrade and maintain the shore cranes.

KPA's handling equipment is limited, plus lack of or poor maintenance and breakdown of equipment

Due to the increase of container traffic, the container handling facilities were extended up-country.
Therefore, two Inland Container Depots (ICD) were constructed in Nairobi / Embakasi (total floor area

Description
1 Conventional/Ro-Ro/Passenger
Mostly used for berthing of passenger vessels, Ro-Ro, and Navy ships. There is an ample parking and manoeuvring space for trucks. There are no permanently allocated shore cranes. The port sheds are adjacent to the pier. They are used only for the storage of transit / trans-shipment cargo. There are fitted shore hydrants, though there are problems with the water pressure. The long-term plan is to convert this berth into a dedicated passenger vessel berth.
2 Conventional/Passenger
Used for berthing of passenger vessels and Ro-Ro. There are no shore cranes at berth no.3.
The port shed is next to berth no.1 and adjacent to berth no.2. It is used only as transit / trans-shipment cargo storage shed.
3 Conventional/GBHL facility
Mostly used for the discharge of bulk grain. The GBHL facility of discharge into their silos is situated here. It is also used for passenger vessels if berth nos. 1 and 2 are occupied. There is manoeuvring space for trucks. There is a corridor used as a temporary stacking yard for steel cargo between shed nos. 2 and 3. The port shed is used only as transit / trans-shipment cargo storage shed.
4 Conventional
Mostly used for the discharge of bagged, bulk, and steel cargo. With regard to the conventional discharge of steel, this berth is among the preferred ones due to the ample
manoeuvring space for trucks, the temporary stacking yard between shed nos.4 and 5, and the shore crane capacity. There are three allocated shore cranes and additionally one crane that is shunted from berth no.3 or no. 5.
The port shed is attached to shed no.3 and adjacent to berth no.4. It is used only as transit / trans-shipment cargo storage shed.
5 Conventional/Ro-Ro
Mostly used for Ro-Ro operations of container vessels, i.e. Messina Lines and Global Container Lines.
There is manoeuvring space for trucks. There is a temporary stacking yard for steel cargo that is occasionally discharged here. There are three allocated shore cranes, but only one is operational.
The port shed is attached to shed no.4 and adjacent to berth no.5. It is used only as transit / trans-shipment cargo storage shed.
7 Conventional
Also a preferred berth for the conventional discharge of bulk cereals and fertilizers. Occasionally steel cargo of less than 5-mt unit weight is discharged. There is manoeuvring space for trucks. There are three allocated shore cranes (4.5-mt SWL capacity) and additionally one crane that is shunted from berth no.8. The port shed is attached to shed no.8 and adjacent to berth no.7. It is normally used for transit awaiting inland rail transport and trans-shipment cargo.
8 Conventional/Bulk soda facility
Also a preferred berth for the conventional discharge of bulk and bagged cereals and fertilizers.
Occasionally steel cargo of less than 5-mt unit weight is discharged. There is manoeuvring space for trucks. There is a temporary stacking yard for steel cargo. There are four allocated shore cranes and additionally one crane that is shunted from berth no.7 and no. 9.
The port shed is attached to shed no.7 and adjacent to berth no.8. It is in a bad state of disrepair It is normally used as temporary storage, not suitable for bagged cargo.
9 Conventional
It is dedicated to loading of bulk soda ash. Also, it is used for lightening and discharge of bagged and bulk fertilizer cargo. A loading arm is connected to two conveyor belt systems, which run from the Magadi Soda Company shed in Shimanzi. There is manoeuvring space for trucks. There is a temporary stacking yard for steel cargo. There are two allocated shore cranes (4.5-mt SWL capacity) and additionally one crane that is shunted from berth nos.8 and 10. The port shed is attached to shed no.10 and adjacent to berth no.9. It is normally used for transit awaiting inland rail transport and trans-shipment cargo.
10 Conventional/Tanker
Mostly used for the discharge of bagged grain, fertilizer, and steel cargo. In the recent past bulk clinker, gypsum and coal cargo consigned to other receivers (other than Bamburi Portland Cement). Loading operations for iron ore are also dedicated for this berth. There is maneuvering space for trucks and a temporary stacking yard for steel cargo. There are two allocated shore cranes (4.5-mt SWL capacity) both are operational. The port shed is attached to shed no.9 and adjacent to berth no.10. It is normally used for transit awaiting inland rail transport and trans-shipment cargo. It is also used as transit / trans-shipment cargo storage shed.
11 Conventional
Mostly used for the discharge of bulk grain and fertilizers. Occasionally used for the discharge of bagged cargo. It is also a preferred berth. There is manoeuvring space for trucks. There are four allocated shore cranes (4.5-mt SWL capacity), but only three are operational. The port shed is attached to shed no.12 and adjacent to berth no.11. It is normally used for the storage of trans-shipment cargo waiting trans-shipment vessel.
12 Conventional/Ro-Ro
Mostly used for Ro-Ro vessels and vessels discharging / loading small parcels of trans-shipment bagged cargo. There is manoeuvring space for trucks. The port authority palns to dedicate this berth for container vessels.
There are two allocated shore cranes (4.5-mt SWL capacity). The port shed is used for the storage of trans-shipment cargo waiting trans-shipment vessel.
