2. Operational Overview: Agency Updates
- WFP: The agency currently operates through 34 Humanitarian Hubs in NWFP and is planning to reduce this amount to 22 hubs by end of March. In the month of January, distribution covered 2.7 million individual beneficiaries. The expected distribution workload for February is to cover 2.6 million beneficiaries, and distribution will begin February 15th. WFP recently received an order from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of NWFP for distribution to 7,000 beneficiaries in D.I. Khan and Tank districts.
- CONCERN: During the month of January, CONCERN has published tenders for its partners IRSP (in Buner) and EPS (in Swat) as these organizations did not have the capacity to do so themselves. 122.5 Mt of vegetable seeds were delivered and distributed as well as 13,200 chickens. Tenders for 350 cows for these districts have also been opened. As well, tenders have been opened for implementing partners RDP (in Balakot) and Haashar Association (in Siran Valley). These tenders are for 127,300 forest and orchard plants, and suppliers’ assessment is in progress (purchase orders will be issued next week).
- ACTED: The agency has procured 10,300 Household Kits, 2,000 Hygiene kits, and 1,968 shelter kits (each kit consisting of 1 winterised sheet and 4 quilts) in total. ACTED is involved in education, rehabilitation, infrastructure, irrigation, and WASH activities in Swat, Malakand, and Peshawar districts. It has recently begun 3 projects in Swat and Chakdara in these sectors. The organization has launched tenders today for the provision of 23,200 blankets, 500 agricultural kits, 435 sewing kits& machines, and 32,000 metres of ‘lawn’ cloth. Tenders close on 17th of February. ACTED currently has one office and one warehouse in Timergara, two warehouses in Swat, and two warehouses in Chakdara. It is looking for an additional warehouse in Swat and one in Chakdara, which will bring the total to 7 warehouses.
- IOM: No operational update today.
Update: Humanitarian Logistics Base in Pirpiai
- WFP has established a Humanitarian Logistics Base in Pirpiai, Nowshera. The base is intended to support and provide services to the operations of WFP, UN agencies, and other humanitarian organizations in Pakistan. It has been used and will continue to be used as a storage facility for shipments to many parts of NWFP and into Northern Afghanistan. The base will be fully equipped with emergency storage facilities to complement emergency preparedness in Pakistan. Storage capacity amounts to about 50,000 Mt. The feasibility of including Cold Chain storage is being evaluated. The 1.25 million USD project is spread over a 22-acre site and will include a parameter wall and CCTV cameras for security. Security concerns have posed the biggest challenge and have caused the project to continuously change and adapt. Services that will be offered to humanitarian organizations include dry port facilities and customs clearance on-site in the near future. The inauguration date for the base is projected as June 30th, 2010. Future plans include the eventual handover of the facility to the Government of Pakistan for use as a dry port.
