General Information
Floods have continued to affect infrastructure around the country.
The shift of heavy rainfall pattern is now in the Western and North western provinces.
Though this being the case, efforts are being made to have information regarding Northern Province and other districts of Southern province that have not been highlighted yet.
Roads Infrastructure
- Lusaka: There has been relatively low rainfall recorded over the week 25th to 29th February to adversely affect access with the district. The water in most of the compounds that had flood waters has receded. Coupled with government efforts of grading the gravel roads in the compounds and pumping of excess waters the situation is almost normalised.
- Southern Province: The province has been hard hit by floods resulting in extensive damage to the roads infrastructure. Information has been gathered on roads in Kalomo district. In Livingstone town, a narrative of damaged roads has been given. Note that from the previous report on Southern Province roads, 2 spreadsheets for Kalomo and Livingstone have been included.
- See attached document marked SP for reference.
- Western, Northern and North Western: Efforts are being made on collection of information on damaged roads. Districts to be submit report in the forthcoming week.
Aerodromes
- Relief food airlift is another mode of transport used in emergency operations. The Zambian government has so far made some effort to reach out certain areas using this mode.
- Namwala and Itezhi-tezhi districts in the Southern province are among some of the areas reached so far. The base has been set at Choma Airstrip.
- This in many cases is the last option in delivering relief foods to the affected areas because of costs associated with the operation.
- As WFP Cluster Lead, other NGOs and stakeholders need to know where aerodromes are located around the country. A list of all aerodromes in Zambia have been compiled and presented herein.
- See document attached marked ‘aerodromes’ for details of location (by co-ordinates), runway surface, length/width of runway, operator among others.
- Since the list is huge, for specific condition of particular runway can be obtained in liaison with the Department of Civil Aviation upon request.
