Highlights
- On 02 September, Pakistan’s Religious Affairs Minister Hamid Kazmi was injured and his driver was killed in Islamabad, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on his vehicle. The attack raised concern about security in the capital.
- Three suicide bomb attacks took place over the weekend 26-27 September in Peshawar, Bannu, and Gilgit (NWFP/FATA region), killing 27 people and injuring 150. Amongst the injured was one UN staff member in Peshawar.
- 56,000 – 84,000 individuals were displaced as a result of military operations in Khyber Agency on 07 September. The UN Refugee Agency has estimated that 87 percent of them have moved in with relatives and 13 percent are renting.
- UN OCHA has confirmed that at the end of September the District Reconstruction Unit (DRU) has requested for all NGOs (international and national) to suspend all operations in DI Khan and Tank for support of IDPs in South Waziristan. Initially, food distribution was not suspended; however, distribution has now been put on hold.
- The Government of Pakistan has decided to re-open registration of newly displaced people, and to de-link registration from the distribution of the government cash grant of 25,000 PAK Rs. All new registered IDPs will only be eligible for humanitarian assistance.
- Revised data provided by the GoP indicates the official IDP figures of the National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) still stands at 382,950 families (status since 11 September), approx 2.7 IDPs, out of which 1.6 million have reportedly returned to their place of origin.
- The Logistics Cluster participated in the Consolidated Appeals process – 2010 planning workshop hosted by UN OCHA.
- The overall number of operational hubs has decreased from 45 to 29: eight in host communities, 20 in the area of returns, and one in the area of stayees (those that did not evacuate)
