On 6 March 2007, with the logistical supports from the UN Joint Logistics Center (UNJLC) and CARE International, UNDP and the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) Human Rights Unit distributed 2,300 jerry cans to the households of Damrat Sheikh Abdalbagy and Boirsaid IDP Gathering (locality of Kutum, North Darfur). This distribution was a part of UNDP's series of events to celebrate the International Women's Day in Darfur.
Due to the lack of water resources within their villages, women and children in Damrat and Boirsaid spend 2-3 hours traveling to Kutum to fetch water. Therefore, jerry cans were distributed to help women and children have additional water storage so that they decrease the frequency of their trips to Kutum. The jerry can distribution took place in the Damrat Elementary School and the gathering area of Boirsaid. Each household received two jerry cans. In total, this distribution benefited 870 households of Damrat (6,200 population) and 259 households of Boirsaid (1735 population).
Prior to the distribution, the ceremony was held at the guest house of Damrat Sheikh Abdalbagy with approximately 70 community leaders of Sheikhs and Omdas, the representatives of the Security Commission of Kutum Locality, the Judge from Kutum, UNMIS Human Rights, the Swedish Save the Children and UNDP. This ceremony provided the opportunity to discuss other issues in the communities and to collectively promote peace in the area of Kutum as well as in Darfur. Four footballs and volleyballs were also distributed to support recreation activities in the elementary schools of Damrat and Boirsaid.
