Road Assessment Banda Aceh - Lamno
Objectives
- To assess the present conditions of the damaged bridges along Banda Aceh - Lumno road;
- To determine the possibilities of replacing the washed out decks with bailey bridges;
- To advise Engineering Corps on the methodology in execution of the works.
| Bridge name | Coordinates | Estimated length, m* | Conditions | Possible solution | Remarks |
| Laupung (Cago)-Lhok Kaca- Chief of Army instructed the Engineering Corps to complete the works on 10/2/2005. Support from UN is not needed. | 50 719 456 | 80 | Deck was washed out. Both abutments are in good condition. Middle pier damaged | Repair the damaged pier. Bailey bridge is possible , 2 x 40 m section. | The damaged pier has to be repaired with concrete that needs 28 days to reach the max. strength, unless rapid hardening cement is used to cut the time to 14 days. Therefore, the repairing of this damaged pier should be the first priority. |
| Pulut (Peulot) | 49 409 365 | 40 | Deck was washed out. Bridge approach was washed out. New channel was created. | Rebuild the approach and construct stone filled gabions to protect the approach. Armco type culvert with a span of 2.50 m x 12 m should be constructed at the channel. Bailey bridge is possible, 2 x 20 m section | |
| Krueng Kala | 48 818 460 | 40 | Deck was washed out. Both abutments are in good condition. | Bailey bridge is possible, 1 x 40 m section. | |
| Krueng Lamili (Lam Ilie) | 48 658 470 | 35 | Deck was washed out. One abutment was totally destroyed. | Rebuild the destroyed abutment, using stone-filled gabions. Bailey bridge is possible, 1 x 35 m section. | |
| Lumno (Lambeuso) | 60 556 090 | 90 | New bridge on new road alignment. | New abutments and a pier have to be constructed, using stone filled gabion baskets. Bailey bridge is possible, 2 x 45m. | |
| Total | 285 |
* The bridge lengths were provided by the Engineering Corps, Indonesian Army.
TNI Engineering Corps' plan
- Banda Aceh-Meulaboh Road rehabilitation will be completed by 26th March, 2005
- In support of road repairs between Banda Aceh to Meulaboh, an estimated 4,500 will be employed. Engineering troops and equipment will be deployed end Jan / early Feb
- Gabion, 10,000 cu.m was estimated and requested by the Corps to be utilized on Banda Aceh-Meulaboh Road.
- For Banda Aceh-Lumno section, it was planned that the earthwork to be completed on 18th February, 2005. Engineering troops are already at work and one bridge has already been completed.
Methodology
With the concept of emergency work in mind, it was advised that as much as possible the stone filled gabion baskets should be used in construction of abutments and bridge approach protection. Jakarta has several gabion manufacturers. The stone quarries were said to be operating within 3-5 km from the bridge sites and stone have been found readily at sites.
Recommendations
The required sections of bailey bridges, Armco-type culvert, and gabion baskets must be transported to bridge sites before or at the latest on 8th February, 2500 (employment date of the workforce).
Immediate requirements
- Bailey bridge sections (excl. Laupung bridge);
- 2 x 45.00m
- 1 x 40.00m
- 2 x 20.00m
- 1 x 35.00m
- Armco-type culvert of 12.00 m long with 2.50m span
- Gabion baskets for 500 cu.m
Outcome
Through the repair and construction of the above mentioned bridges along with raod repairs, access will be created, thus enabling movement by road and reducing the demand on both air transport and sea deliveries. In addition, it will open up much needed access for commercial transporters paving the way towards 'recovery' for the people living along the northern part of the so called 'western shore'. WFP estimates that this will result in significant cost savings and reliance on air transportation.
