CUSTOMS AT THE PORT OF BELAWAN IN MEDAN
The following addendum to the UNJLC IOT INDONESIA WEEKLY BULLETIN 050517 is a correction to some of the information regarding vehicles processing published yesterday. This information is of significance to the humantarian community with goods entering Indonesia through MEDAN.
PORT BELAWAN (MEDAN)
-
The biggest problem appears to be consignees are not picking up their goods after they have been cleared (853 containers). Our office in Banda will also receive a list of consignees and publish it on the web site and pass it to OCHA - who will then pass it to the humanitarians there. JLC is currently suggesting that agencies/organizations hire a clearing and forwarding agent to do all the clearing and forwarding for all the stuck containers. THIS MAY BE THE SIMPLEST AND BEST SOLUTION.
- Sufficient handling capacity exists to move the goods from the port after proper clearances. Handling capacity can be increased relatively easily should the port authority deem it necessary.
- More containers are expected to arrive at the Belawan seaport. It should be noted that recent efforts by JLC to speed the flow of goods through the BELAWAN port have resulted in the following arrangements. The only goods now classified as RESTRICTED are VEHICLES (two categories NEW or USED). For NEW vehicles, approval must be provided by BRR. For USED Vehicles, approval must be provided by the Ministry of Trade. EXCEPTION - garbage trucks, ambulances and cargo trucks must still be cleared by Ministry of Trade. NB:Updates to procedures/fast-tracking will be sent to you and OCHA in Banda and also published on UNJLC website by the end of this week.
