Country: Honduras
Date of report: 7 September 2007
All red and yellow alerts in the country have been removed yesterday morning, except for the municipalities located on the lower banks of the river Ulua (yellow).
The UN assessment mission working in the Gracias a Dios department did not report any particular emergency situation. Only a few hundreds remain in shelters there, assisted by COPECO, PAHO and WFP.
COPECO informed about the Nicaraguans whose boat capsized near the Raya coast of Honduras. In fact, some 200 fishermen from Nicaragua where at work in high seas near Cabo de Gracias cape, totally unaware of the proximity of the hurricane. A total of 49 of these were rescued by Hondurean villagers, 3 bodies were found on the beach - the rest are reported missing. Those alive are in bad condition, assisted by the health care unit in Raya. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is co-ordinating repatriation with the GoN.
The international NGO GOAL, working in the Gracias a Dios department, reports 28 Hondureans missing in the Nicaraguan cayos facing the Raya shore and Gracias a Dios cape. Apparently, the GoH did not have information about these people missing. GOAL handed over to MoFA officials a list of names and other personal data.
