EC Flight is a project funded by the Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) of the European Commission (now The European Commission (EC) Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO)).
EC Flight to/within Somalia
The ECHO Flight was established in 1994 in response to a sudden and substantial increase of demand for humanitarian air transport capacity for Somalia and was recently re-named "EC Flight". The key objective of EC Flight is to provide safe, reliable, efficient and cost-effective air transport capacity to facilitate the implementation of humanitarian and post-emergency development projects.
While Somalia always continued to be the main area of operations, EC Flight is a highly flexible tool that in the past has been used in several different countries including Ethiopia, Sudan, Rwanda or Mali. Currently, EC Flight services cover destinations in Somalia, Northern Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The EC Flight base is located in Nairobi.
The EC Flight project is implemented by a contractor, the EC Flight Operator which is currently Air Traffic, which is running the EC Flight Reservation Office in Nairobi as well as several field bases. The implementation of the EC Flight project is monitored by the EC Flight Co-ordination Office (ECFCO), which forms part of the EC Somalia Operations in Nairobi.
EC Flight is operating in accordance with the following basic principles:
- EC Flight is a humanitarian tool, and is not available for political missions.
- EC Flight applies highest air safety standards.
- EC Flight services are free-of-charge for entitled organisations/personnel.
- EC Flight operates in accordance to a general schedule. Flights outside this general schedule are possible, depending on the demand and the specific circumstances.
- EC Flight does not compete with sustainable commercial services offering a safe and reliable humanitarian air transport capacity at acceptable prices.
- EC Flight is granting priority access to agencies implementing relevant EU-funded projects.
The "EC Flight" service is operated by Air Traffic under the responsibility of the EC Delegation in Kenya. The reservations office of Air Traffic is now open for bookings (tel: +254 20 604426/604622/604623, fax: +254 20 604427, satphone: +88213 4333 9915, e-mail: reservations@airtraffic.co.ke). The lists of eligible partners approved for the previous Echoflight/Aviations Sans Frontieres operation will remain valid for the new service.
ECHO Flight to/within Northern Kenya
In the current context of the drought emergency in North Kenya, ECHO is pleased to advise you of the start of a 'Flight Service' from Friday 7th April 2006 and ending end of September 2006.
This service will be provided by the ASF Belgium Flight Operation in Northern Kenya.
We request your organisations to submit to our office in Nairobi (EFCO), a "Staff list Form" per project complete with the supporting documents substantiating the source of funding for prioritisation. The same list should also be submitted to our Reservations Office at ASF Belgium / Air Traffic.
We would request all users to forward their bookings (forms for passenger and cargo available in the attached SOP's) with immediate effect.
