This document provides guidance for organizations on how to use the Waste Management and Recycling (WMR) Infrastructure Assessment tools to identify local waste value solutions and reduce reliance on landfills. These WMR tools are part of the broader Logistics Capacity Assessments (LCA), hosted by the Logistics Cluster, and are available to the entire humanitarian community.

Key steps for using the WMR tools:

1) Understand the waste management context and regulatory environment. Learn from the availability and condition of local waste collection and recovery services. Determine whether waste is being properly sorted and processed, or if it ends up mixed in landfills due to service disruptions. In such cases, identify alternative services that can recover the value of waste and reduce landfill dependency.

→ Refer to LCA Template 3.7 for detailed guidance.

2) Identify local waste value solutions. Explore existing local service providers that can refurbish, recycle, or recover energy from waste.

→ Refer to LCA Template 4.12 for a structured approach.

In addition, the WREC team has also developed practical guidelines to help organizations conduct country-level mappings of waste management and recycling infrastructure. These guidelines include instructions for navigating the Logie Map and are detailed within this document.
