On 30 and 31 July, the Yemen Logistics Cluster facilitated a training at the WFP warehouse in Sana’a on the set-up of Mobile Storage Units (MSUs). The training was coordinated by the Logistics Cluster team in Sana’a to enhance the capacity of partner organisations in terms of warehouse, commodity and emergency hubs management.This initiative took place within the wider framework of the Logistics Cluster’s goal to implement an effective logistical response to the humanitarian emergency in Yemen, while improving emergency preparedness by strengthening the capacity of staff in-country that could be readily deployed to other locations in case of need.
The two day sessions focused on training logistics and warehouse management staff of partner organisations on how to install MSUs. Adopting a “hands-on” approach, the training consisted of two parts: the first covered the introduction of the general technical details, whilst the second involved participants directly with the actual construction of a MSU. A debriefing session at the end of the training also allowed to address the questions and issues risen.
Overall, 31 staff members from 16 organisations (UN Agencies, NGOs and personnel from the Yemeni Ministry of Health) participated in the training, giving positive feedback and describing it as useful to gain more in-depth understanding of the process, as well as more confidence in their own abilities.
Now that a first team has been trained, the Logistics Cluster will ensure that this expertise is implemented as much as possible within Yemen, whilst more trainings will be carried out in Hodeida and Aden, possibly in coordination with UNHCR. If conditions allow it, the team trained by the Logistics Cluster will join these activities and offer their knowledge and expertise whilst consolidating and complementing the acquired skills.
