Since 2007 the Logistics Cluster has been coordinating WFP Logistics Services for the Humanitarian Community. This service supports humanitarian response in terms of multi-modal transport (air, water, road, rail) and storage of NFIs.
This inter-agency service has facilitated the delivery of 52,016 mt of NFIs from the humanitarian community in DRC from which 16,692 mt was transported during 2010. The consistency the transport service is providing has been vital for relief items to reach communities in the most remote areas of DRC requiring transporters to overcome excruciating obstacles along the way.
In Orientale province, in the area of Haut Uele, the Logistics Cluster facilitated the transport of relief items for around 2,175 households and 400 host families who were victims of army conflicts in Haut Uele. 11 trucks transported RRMP1 kits which include both WASH and SHELTER kits providing access to beneficiaries where there is lack of commercial carriers. Drivers stopped in three important hot spots in the localities of Kaka (15 km from Dungu), Ngilima (35 km from Dungu) and in another location (15 km from Ngilima) along the way.
However their journey was not easy, fighting unpaved roads and muddy conditions, drivers had to make use of tree trunks which they cut themselves to leverage and free trucks from the gripping soil of DRC.
In Goma town of North Kivu province, equipment and medical stocks used for blood transfusion were transported by air, to assist about 4730 household victims of war in the territory of Beni (248 km from Goma). With the support of the Logistics Services, the Cluster was able to coordinate and provide access through air assets to Beni territory for an operation that would require six months of continued urgent life saving relief items and land transport was not a viable option.
The Logistics Cluster will continue to support humanitarian organizations to meet the logistical challenge in helping them to deliver humanitarian assistance to the most vulnerable.
