PREPAREDNESS WORKSHOPS IN HONDURAS AND GUATEMALA
Both Honduras and Guatemala are actively engaged in logistics preparedness activities with the National Disaster Management Agencies of each country and humanitarian partners. They completed their National Preparedness Workshops, and the teams are finalising their respective Action Plans. The region will be organising the first Sub-Regional Logistics Preparedness Workshop for Central America in the first quarter of 2022.
FIELD-BASED PREPAREDNESS PROJECT IN ECUADOR
The Field-Based Preparedness Project is now active in Ecuador. The country will also host the first Regional Logistics Response Team Training in Spanish in April. Final selection results will be communicated to the applicants in the coming weeks.
The Preparedness Team in-country is actively engaging with the National Disaster Management Office and the Permanent Commission of Contingencies and other key actors to finalise the capacity mapping exercise and identify critical logistics bottlenecks in the country. Dedicated sessions on the implementation of the law on importation in emergencies have been also organised jointly with the Honduras Red Cross and national authorities. For more information on preparedness activities in Honduras please consult the dedicated webpage.
On August 14, 2021, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti’s southern departments.
The National Logistics Sector, led by the Civil Protection General Directorate (DGPC) and co-led by the World Food Programme (WFP), supported humanitarian organisations and national authorities through technical guidance, up-to-date information, coordination, and emergency logistics support. Since the beginning of the response, WFP and DGPC coordinated convoys of over 450 vehicles, transporting relief items to the most affected areas on behalf of 54 organisations. Despite the many challenges faced in Haiti, the Logistics Sector carried out 30 national and departmental coordination meetings in different areas of the country, which saw the attendance of over 100 partners. For more information please visit the Haiti Logistic Cluster webpage.
In October, the Logistics Cluster held a Logistics Cluster Induction Training in Peru. Upon strong engagement and interest expressed by participants, the country is now considered as a potential Field-Based Preparedness Project to build on the extensive knowledge available in-country.
As part of regional initiatives based out of WFP’s Panama Regional Bureau, the Logistics Cluster held the first Sub-Regional Preparedness Workshop for South America in Medellin, Colombia. The event made possible the meeting of 35 actors from 6 countries of the region representing the public, private and humanitarian sectors. Learn more about this event and the way forward at this link (Spanish), and watch the video here.
